Immediately preceding the Senior Class, coloured belts take part in Senior Kumite. Different from self-defence and static technique acquisition, kumite teaches students to apply their skills in motion, against an opponent.
While some time is dedicated to developing sports kumite skills, the main focus of these classes is on traditional kumite. Unlike sports kumite, which is generally performed at a distance using sudden dynamic attacks and retreats, traditional kumite is close range using flowing movements and the concept of muchimi (stickiness). Through muchimi, an opponent maintains contact with an adversary, which allows for control. Once the contact is broken, the control disappears.
More generally, Senior Kumite students also learn spatial awareness, targeting, reaction, timing, how to develop effective techniques and how to read an opponent.
