Immediately following the Junior Class, coloured belts take part in Junior Kumite. Different from self-defence and static technique acquisition, kumite teaches students to apply their skills in motion, against an opponent.
While traditional kumite focuses more on close combat, which doesn’t translate well to the rules and regulations of competition, Juniors focus on Sports Kumite, allowing them to transfer skills to the tournament setting.
Sharing many elements such as control of self and others, reading an opponent, spatial awareness, targeting, reaction, timing and effective vs ineffective techniques, sports kumite also focuses on points sparring and the formalities of entering and exiting a tournament tatami.
